Posted on February 12, 2021February 19, 2021 by Astron Institute of International Studies

Most of the IELTS students fear facing the IELTS speaking exam. Mainly because students have to give this exam face to face to the examiner and have to speak in English.

The truth is you can score 8+ bands in IELTS speaking exam with simple techniques shared on this blog.

First, let’s understand the IELTS Speaking exam pattern:

Whether you are giving IELTS academic or general, or have opted for online or offline mode, IELTS speaking exam pattern remains the same.

The IELTS speaking exam is conducted by an examiner, face to face with the student. The duration of this exam is 11-14 minutes and the exam is recorded.

IELTS

There are 3 parts in the IELTS Speaking exam:

Part 1 is introductory in which examiner will ask to speak on easy topics such as your neighbourhood, the weather, your education, books one reads etc.

In Part 2, the student will be given a topic along with points that have to be included in the talk.

The student will have 1 minute to prepare and make quick notes. After that, the student needs to speak on the topic for 1 to 2 minutes.

In Part 3, Examiner will ask you questions related to the topic given in part 2. The student has scope to speak for a good time and score well on all parameters, particularly in part 3.

Please note, IELTS speaking exam doesn’t focus on one’s knowledge or expertise on a topic but only on English speaking skills.

Let’s take a look at points that will help you score high in IELTS speaking exam.

  • Common Topics

Make a list of common topics such as your introduction, hobbies, whether you like etc. Students can also refer to IELTS Practice tests to get more topics.

Collect your thoughts around these topics develop the answers and practise speaking them.

One good way to practice is to record your answers and listen to them. This will help to identify and work on one’s weaknesses.

  • Be Talkative

The examiner is assessing speaking skills thus, one must avoid one-liner or short answers.

Speak freely without hesitation. Be confident while speaking and express answers with better words.

e.g. if the examiner asks about the weather. Don’t just say it’s hot or cold. Add more to this answer and talk about how was the weather last week, what weather you enjoy the most etc.

  • Avoid fillers

It is very common for students to use filler words in spoken English.

However, it is to be avoided in the IELTS speaking exam as examiner is giving the score on every word that the student is speaking.

Make sure not to use words such as like, okay, right, you know etc. in IELTS speaking exam.

The best way to practice is to become more conscious and avoid using fillers in your daily conversations.

  • Use Linking Words

Make sure to use linking words in the answers. This will help to link and continue the flow of the sentences that one is speaking.

Use words such as on the other hand, however, moreover, in contrast, thus etc.

Please be cautious and don’t overuse vocabulary as it may make the answers sound wordy and hard to understand.

  • Pronunciation

The students need to put more time and practice pronunciation for IELTS speaking exam.
